Basic Leader Training 2013

The Shenandoah Area Council announces the Basic Leader Training Course for 2013.  This two-part course is the required training for all adult leader positions in Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops, and Venturing Crews. 

  • Fast Start Training for your registered position &
  • This is Scouting are prerequisites for taking this course. 
  • Both can be found at www.myscouting.org

Location: 

  • Leader Specific & Commissioner Basic Training will be held at First Presbyterian Church located at 116 South Loudoun Street; Winchester, VA
  • BALOO, & Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills  will be held at Camp Rock Enon located at 292 Rock Enon Springs Rd; Gore, VA

Please Note:  Pre-Registration is REQUIRED, NO WALK-INS will be accepted.

Fast Start & This is Scouting:  This is required initial training for for all adult leaders serving youth in the BSA.  Both training courses are available via the internet at the BSA Online Learning Center www.myscouting.org

Leader Specific Training:  This is required for all adult leaders and provides the specialized knowledge needed for unit leaders to assume a leadership role in their specific scouting position. 

  • The training will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2013.
  • Sign-in will begin at 7:30am
  • Training starts promptly at 8:00am and should end by 5:00pm or before
  • Lunch will be on your own.
  • Uniform is the Class A uniform for your registered program
  • Fee is $5 if registered by 9/13/13 and $20 if registered after 9/13 and before 9/27/13

Commissioner Basic Training:  Are you an experienced Scouting Parent or Leader who would like to find out more about what a Unit Commissioner does?  A good Commissioner can make the difference between a pack, troop, crew or team that is struggling, and one that is ready to take on the he world.  Learn how to make this difference!  After all, our kids deserve it!  EVERY District needs more Unit Commissioners to mentor our unit leaders and be a resource for them.  Being a Unit Commissioner is not hard and is VERY REWARDING.

Commissioner Basic Training will be offered to all new commissioners, and those who wish to "brush up on their skills"  This course will include:

  • Role of the Commissioner
  • Unit Visitations
  • Membership Management
  • The Charter Renewal Patch with the Unit Commissioner emblem

This training is for:

  • Unit Commissioners
  • District Commissioners
  • Assistant District Commissioners
  • Interested Scouters

You are invited and encouraged to attend. 

  • Training will begin promptly at 8am on October 5, 2013 and end by 4:00pm
  • Lunch will be on your own
  • Uniform is the class A uniform of your registered program
  • Fee is $5 if registered by 9/13/13 and $20 if registered after 9/13 and before 9/27/13

BALOO:  Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation - This is required training for any adults conducting Cub Scout Pack outdoor activities.  BALOO training will be held:

  • Saturday, October 12, 2013 at Camp Rock Enon
  • Check in is at 8:30am on the porch of the Trading Post
  • Training begins promptly at 9:00am and should conclude by 5:00pm
  • Lunch is included
  • Uniform is the Class A uniform of your registered program. 
  • Fee is $15 if registered by 9/13/13.  If you register after 9/13 and before 9/27, the fee is $30

Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills:  Outdoor skills are critical to the success of the Scouting program.  Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills provides adult leaders with the basic outdoor skills and information needed to run the program right.  The program focuses on skills that build confidence and c competence in leaders conducting outdoor camping experiences.  This training is required for:

  • Scoutmasters
  • Assistant Scoutmasters
  • Varsity Team Coaches
  • Assistant Varsity Team Coaches

And is ideal for:

  • Venture Crew Leaders
  • Webelos Den Leaders
  • Assistant Webelos Den Leaders
  • as well as anyone interested in gaining outdoor skills.

It will be held

  • Friday, October 11 - Sunday, October 13, 2013 at Camp Rock Enon
  • Check in will begin at 5:00pm Friday
  • Training begins promptly at 7:00pm on Friday
  • Supper will NOT BE served Friday, please plan accordingly

Please make every effort to arrive at camp as early as possible, allowing time to prepare campsites before dark.  Participants will be asked to prepare a snack for cracker barrel, all other meals are provided, except supper on Friday.  Participants will be assigned to patrols for the outdoor session during Leader Specific Training.

  • Uniform is the Class A Uniform of your registered program. 
  • PLEASE NOTE:  A copy of your BSA Medical form is required for this event (Parts A & B) and must be turned in at check-in.  You can download that form by clicking HERE
  • Equipment:  You can download an Equipment List, by clicking HERE
  • Fee:  $40 if registered by 9/13/13.  If you register after 9/13 or before 9/27 the fee is $55
