2019 National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT)

Overview:  The Shenandoah Area Council is pleased to offer National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) in the summer of 2019.  NYLT will bring new skills and greater enthusiasm to your youth leadership.  Scouting recognizes that unit leaders have the primary responsibility for training their youth leaders.  The purpose of NYLT is not to assume that role, but rather to support it.  This week-long course features instruction in skills that can be used at home, at school, on the job, and in particular, at the Scout Unit level.  Through activities, events, games, and adventures, NYLT participants will work hard and play hard together as they put into action the best Scouting has to offer.

Location:  Camp Rock Enon

Course Goals:

  • Give participants the confidence and knowledge to conduct the unit program
  • Provide participants with a clear understanding of team and personal development and how those elements relate to being a leader
  • Guide the participants through the stages of team development
  • Create an environment of Scouting fellowship and fun guided by the Scout Oath and Law
  • Give participants the opportunity to share ideas and experiences with Scouts from other units
  • Have fun and experience Scouting at its best

Qualifications & Expectations: As of February 1, 2019 NEW REQUIREMENTS!!!

  1. The minimum age requirement to attend NYLT will change effective February 1, 2019.  All participants must be 14 years old or 13 years old and have completed the 8th grade; there will be no exceptions!
  2. For 2019 only, an exception will be granted for girls registered in Scouts BSA to attend NYLT without first achieving the First Class rank; they must still meet the age requirements and first attend Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops (ILST).  This will allow troops to have trained youth leaders.  Girls who are registered Venturers and Sea Scouts do not need to achieve the First Class rank, but must attend Introduction to Leadership Skills for Crew (ILSC) prior to participating in NYLT.
  3. Recommendation letter by Scoutmaster or Crew Advisor to be submitted upon registration
  4. Currently serving or likely to serve in a unit-level position of responsibility
