March 17, 2020,

To Our Scouting Families and Communities,

The safety of our Scouts, volunteers, Scouting families, and staff continues to be first and foremost our main concern. For the most up to date information concerning COVID-19, check with your local health officials and through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

As it relates to Scouting here in Shenandoah Area Council;

New:

  • Scouts that need Help: If you know of a Scout family, that may need help with a meal or food, please check our Facebook page for local places offering meals and food pantries. Please share of other locations that you may know of in your community.

  • Council Service Center: We are committed to keeping our Scouting families and staff safe. To that end, the Council Service Center is closed for walk-in customers through April 15th. Staff are continuing to take calls and responding to emails. We are also taking call in orders. Please call/email in advance to place and pay for your order. To do so, please contact Kari Judson at 540-662-2551 or kari.judson@scouting.org

  • Training: This may be a great opportunity for leaders who need training classes. You might have a greater ability to take the online classes that you are missing or would like to refresh your knowledge during this time. For all online course, sign into your account at www.my.scouting.org.  Suggested training courses; Specific Training for you position, Hazardous Weather, and Youth Protection (YPT). For most of us , our YPT runs out this year. Now is a great opportunity to renew. From Gary Chrisman, Council Training Chair

  • Scouting at Home: I would like to suggest that working on Scout badges and rank advancements could provide some focus and constructive activities during the next few weeks.  This might be an ideal time to do Scout stuff for your Cub, Scout, or Venturer at home. Many Scout resources are now available online such as  Merit badge requirements and Duty to God (P.R.A.Y) materials.    Make sure you document what you do at home to show your completed work to your unit leaders. From Mike Spory, VP of Programs

  • Eagle Project Approval/Board of Reviews: We have had many calls regarding project approval and Board of Reviews and if extensions will be granted. Eagle Boards are not meeting. We have contacted National regarding extensions for those needed. As soon as we hear back, we will share the information.

    As previously shared, all in-person Council and District events, activities, and meetings remain postponed or cancelled through Wednesday, April 15th. For units; SAC strongly suggests that Scout units follow suit and postpone or cancel meetings and activities through April 15th. If a unit wants to hold a meeting or activity, you need to consult and get permission from your charter organization.

    As we all are good Scouts, please check on your neighbors and especially the elderly (preferably by phone or email) and offer to pick up groceries, medication, etc. But only if you are not sick.

    The Shenandoah Area Council appreciates your patience and understanding as we navigate through this process.

If you have a fever, cough, or other symptoms associated with COVID-19, or if you believe you may have been exposed to COVID-19, you should contact their healthcare provider immediately.

Yours in Scouting,
