April 8, 2020,

To Our Scouting Families and Communities,

The safety of our Scouts, volunteers, Scouting families, and staff continue to be our first and foremost main concern. The Shenandoah Area Council (SAC) Leadership has been in discussion with local health officials about COVID-19 and its continued effect on the Scouting program within the SAC. Please know that we are monitoring developments regarding COVID-19 both locally and through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The SAC Executive Committee held a conference call this week and discussed current information regarding COVID-19 and the Virginia Governor Northam Stay at Home Order until June 10th. Click here for the Virginia Governors Stay at Home Order.

As such, the Executive Committee deemed it necessary to extend our closure until June 10th. We will continue to monitor the COVID-19 developments and if at a time, Virginia Governor Northam revises his Stay at Home order, the Executive Committee will revisit this decision.

Council Service Center: The Council Service Center is closed until June 10th. However, we do have staff working remotely and designated staff coming in to check the mail, etc.  We have forwarded calls to a designated staff member and staff are checking and responding to emails. Our staff are still here to serve you. If there’s anything you need, do not hesitate to contact us at 540-662-2551, email at or a staff members email address.

Status of Council Events: All in-person Council and District events, activities, and meetings are postponed or cancelled until June 10th. We encourage chairs of the different council and district committees to continue conducting business via conference calls using free options.

Unit Meetings and Activities: SAC strongly suggest that Scout units follow suit and postpone or cancel meetings and activities June 10th. If a unit wants to hold a meeting or activity, you need to consult and get permission with your charter organization.

Order of the Arrow (Shenshawpotoo Lodge): Brotherhood is postponed. Lodge and chapters in person meetings are canceled until June 10th. The Lodge will be conducting Unit Elections virtually. Information on the details will be distributed soon by the lodge.

Summer Programs: Currently all summer programming at Camp Rock Enon is scheduled to continue as planned. We continue to monitor Covid-19 developments and have contingency plans ready to implement if needed. The Summer Camp Early Bird Deadline has been extended to May 30th to give our units and parents more time. If our camp schedule has to change or you’re unable to attend due to COVID-19 a full refund will be given. More details will be forthcoming as we get closer to Summer Camp.

CRE Off-Season: Off-season camping and CRE is closed through June 10th.

Council Service Center: At this time, the Council Service Center will continue to be open for business during normal operating hours. We have implemented additional protection procedures and are sanitizing the Scout Shop multiple times a day. Anything a family or unit needs from the SAC Scout Shop, can be shipped to you by calling and placing an order (540-662-2551).

Refunds: We are working diligently to reschedule all activities that are postponed. Your registration will be transferred to the new date. If you are unable to attend on the new date, we will work with you on a refund. If you are unable to attend on the new date, please consider not requesting a refund and allowing your registration fee to support the SAC as a charitable donation. This will help us offset cost already incurred and lost income from cancelled events.

If you have a fever, cough, or other symptoms associated with COVID-19, or if you believe you may have been exposed to COVID-19, you should contact their healthcare provider immediately.

If you have any questions or concerns about any upcoming event or activity, please reach out to the Council Service Center.

This is an evolving situation, as such, this information is subject to change. We will continue to update you on key developments and appreciate your understanding of any changes.

Yours in Scouting,

Jason Stedman             Frank Armstrong
