High Adventure Skills Resource Management

What is Powder Horn?

In Scouting, Powder Horn is the vessel to sustain the spirit of the outdoors in our youth today.  Along with the spirit of the outdoors, you will also gather knowledge to share, motivate and direct youth.

Powder Horn will give you the necessary skills to oversee a high adventure program.  It will also help you identify local resources for your group's program.

What do I need before the course?

Complete the following online:

  • Boy Scout or Venturing Youth Protection
  • Safety Afloat
  • Safe Swim Defense
  • Weather Hazard
  • Climb on Safely
  • Trek Safely

What will we do?

Powder Horn is organized around the Venturing Program's High Adventure elements and Boy Scouting's High Adventure merit badge elements.  It is intended to help adult leaders get started finding and using the resources for high adventure programs.

Planned topics may include:  Backpacking, Cave Exploring, Conservation Projects, Cooking, Cycling/Mountain Biking, Emergency Preparedness, Expedition Planning, First Aid, Fishing, Land Navigation, Leave No Trace, Outdoor Living History, Physical Fitness, Plants & Wildlife, Shooting Sports, Watercraft, Weather Forecasting & Wilderness Survival.

Come Experience an opportunity to get hands-on knowledge and practical resources to provide a challenging and fun outdoor program for your older youth.

Who can attend Powder Horn?

To attend Powder Horn, Scouters must:

  1. Be registered members of the Boy Scouts of America, at least 14 years or up
  2. Have completed Boy Scout or Venturing Youth Protection Training
  3. Have completed the basic training courses for their Scouting position
    • This is Scouting (for all adult leaders)
    • Leader Specific Training for
      • Den Leaders
      • Cubmasters
      • Webelos leaders
      • Tiger Cub leaders
      • Pack committee members
      • Troop committee members
      • Scoutmasters
      • Varsity Scout coaches
      • Venturing leaders
    • Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills
      • All adult participants are encouraged to complete the IOLS training course before attending the Powder Horn course.  It is required for Troop & Crew leaders.
    • Youth Protection Training (youth must complete also)
  4. Be capable of functioning safely in an outdoor environment. (Submission of the BSA Annual Health & Medical Record (parts A, B & C) is required for all participants)

What will be required of me as a participant?

  • Meals
  • 1 Polo shirt
  • 1 Cap

**Receive an EXTRA EARLY BIRD FEE if paid in full by March 15, 2017 of $75!  Just pay $175 by March 15, 2017 and we will credit the balance as paid in full!!!**
